Department of Software Engineering

The Software Engineering Department held an Activity Day on Monday, 9 December 2019. The activity consisted of two main sessions in which a number of Palestinian IT companies were invited to attend and participate. Among these companies were the ones with which the Department has agreements for internships and student-faculty training programs since the very beginning of the Software Engineering program establishment.

The first session included eight different project-presentations for 3rd-year Software Engineering students. These projects were part of the User Experience and Interaction course, which is taught for the first time in Fall 2019 as part of the Software Engineering curriculum. In general, IT companies had a positive impression for a relatively very good academic level presented, along with a relatively very good and presentable personalities. Moreover, they are very much concerned to have future connections with the students to invest in their presented skills.

The second session was a private meeting with the IT companies attended by Dr. Ireen Hazou, Dr. Michel Hanania, Mr. Hasan Qustantini, Dr. Muna Matar, Mr. Elia Sammour, and monitored by Dr. Suhail Odeh chair of the Software Engineering Department. The meeting included several topics that were discussed with the companies especially to brainstorm ways to overcome the lack of training skills of fresh graduate students in tech fields and help bridge the gap with the industry. One of the many suggestions discussed was to establish a center for students’ internships for a duration of one year after their graduation. It was agreed to hold milestone meetings in the near future to explore ways how to implement strategic planning for the needs mentioned above. Furthermore, the idea to have a Data Science program as a major was also discussed; however, the tendency is to have it as a minor, rather than as a major.

The IT companies which attended the activity day were: 1. Exalt Technologies, 2. Asal Technologies, 3. Jaffa.Net, 4. GSECC, 5. Harri, 6. Ultimit, 7. Transcend, 8. Click Soft, 9. Isra’ Software, and 10. SPARK.
