European Union Representative Visits Bethlehem University

EU VisitBethlehem University students and administrators alike had the opportunity to discuss pertinent issues during a recent visit from Mr. John Gatt Rutter, Representative of the European Union in Jerusalem.

Discussions began with an overview from Mr. Rutter about the work of the EU in both the West Bank and Gaza, followed by a number of questions about the EU’s role in the conflict. A number of students spoke about a wish to see the EU more actively involved, particularly in pressuring Israel to end human rights violations in Palestine through active boycott and divestment of Israeli products. The students also spoke openly about the struggling economy and the lack of job opportunities in Palestine.

Mr. Rutter later met with Brother Peter Bray, Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University, and discussed oppportunities for cooperation between Bethlehem University the EU teams in Jerusalem and Ramallah. For his part, Brother Peter shared the recent news about the purchase of the Mount David property, which will expand the University size by nearly one-third. The Custody of the Holy Land donated $6 million toward the endeavor, with an additional $5.5 million needed to complete the purchase.
