Dr. Maha Fatho, Rest in Peace

Bethlehem University mourns the death of Dr. Maha Fatho, faculty member of the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences, in Jerusalem on Saturday, 17th October 2015.

Dr. Fatho is survived by her husband Jacob, her three sons Yousef, George, Wassim, and two daughters Iba’ and Reem.

Maha joined Bethlehem University as a faculty member in 1991.  She was the dean of the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences from 2002 – 2006.

Maha was a holder of Bachelor Degree in Nursing Science from the Palestine Arab College of Health Professions, Al-Quds University. Maha was always seeking further education and personal development and in 1986, received a Higher Diploma in Midwifery from Al-Amakassed Hospital in Jerusalem.

Further in 1993 she obtained a Higher Diploma in Mother and Child Health.  She obtained her Master degree in Mother and Child Health from the Arab Colleges of Health Professions in Ramallah in 1996.

Her quest for more knowledge did not stop here; in 2009 she started preparing for her PhD. at Glasgow Caledonian University, School of Nursing, Midwifery and Community Health, Scotland. She submitted her dissertation, yet her unfortunate death did not allow her to attend the official graduation which is due to be held in December 2015.

To honor her work, the Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences at Bethlehem University is planning to publish her dissertation.

Maha, was the coordinator of the Midwifery program; the first midwifery program in Palestine. She has also been a community activist and with a wealth of clinical experience   has contributed to developing strategies enhancing midwifery in Palestine.

We would like to finish this eulogy with a quote from Gibran Khalil Gibran’s poem on change, death and love;

My house says to me, "do not leave me, for here dwells your past." And the road says to me, "Come and follow me, for I am your future." And I say to both my house and the road, "I have no past, nor have I a future. If I stay here, there is a going in my staying; and if I go there is a staying in my going. Only love and death change all things."

Kahlil Gibran (1883 - 1931)

Maha’s life has changed the lives of many, and she is loved by her colleagues, students and friends.

May her soul rest in peace
