Archbishop Kelly and Clergy Pay Bethlehem University A Visit

Reaffirming Devotion to the people of Bethlehem

LiverpoolOn Wednesday January 12, Bethlehem University was delighted to welcome back The Most Reverend Archbishop Patrick Kelly, Archbishop of Liverpool and Vice President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of England and Wales as well as other esteemed clergy and guests that BU staff and student ambassadors had the pleasure of meeting with. The entourage was met by Br. Jack Curran - Vice President of Development, Br. Joe Loewenstein - Special Project’s Manager, Mr. Demitri Awwad - Guest Relations Officer, and Mr. Paul Dichter of the Office of Development.

LiverpoolTheir visit coincides with the 2011 visit of Co-ordination of Episcopal Conferences in Support of the Church of the Holy Land and the Assembly of Catholic Bishops in the Holy Land; an annual visit of religious leaders to witness the situation in the Holy Land and to offer support and solidarity as the residents struggle towards a solution to the strife and anguish of this land. Monsignor Peter Fleetwood, of the Archdiocese of Liverpool, stated that they keep returning in order to show the Holy Land’s Christians that they are not forgotten or left behind.

LiverpoolThe lively group, after touring the campus, was shown the university documentary which showcases the university’s work in the Holy Land and then enjoyed lunch in a local Bethlehem restaurant where animated discussion was continued. Student ambassadors were able to share some of the realities of their lives in Palestine, with their guests. Father Mark Madden, of St. Cecelia’s in Tuebrook – Liverpool, who is currently working on a twinning project with St. Justin’s school in Nablus, believes that those involved with Bethlehem University are fortunate as the atmosphere is wonderful. His Beatitude Kelly concurs, affirming that he could not visit the Holy Land without visiting Bethlehem University.

Archbishop Kelly is a devoted supporter of Bethlehem University and its mission, providing leadership and support, even coordinating with Liverpool Hope University to host Bethlehem University students and staff for a conference entitled the Big Hope Global Youth Congress in 2008.

As the visit drew to a close, Msgr. Fleetwood expressed that he was impressed how those here daily experience the presence of the wall without feeling forced to constantly obsess over the enormous barrier. The faculty and staff of Bethlehem University have been working valiantly for 35 years to facilitate this characteristic by creating opportunities and fulfilling the hopes of Palestinians who face barriers, while providing a rich academic background.
