Monday the 15th of June. That was my first day in the US. At about 4:30 we arrived in Washington DC and first impression was: Too hot, Too humid and “huge”. The first thing we did was meet Mrs. Kathy and our buddy interns. My buddy is Colleen Loftus and she is so nice. We spent 4 days in Washington and these were the best 4 days of my life! We did so many things. We visited the headquarters of Catholic Charities USA where we met the most amazing people.

We went to the movies and watched Jurassic World in IMAX 3D—“so scary!” We went site seeing and watched a baseball game—a dream comes true. And most importantly, we had a lot of new food and it was DELICIOUS!  Friday came and everyone was ready to say goodbye and spread all over the country. I had to go from Washington to Detroit and from there fly to Columbus, OH. For the first flight, I had some company (Demitri, Maram and Waleed), but from Detroit to Columbus I was alone. I was really scared and nervous because it was my first time flying alone. I was afraid to miss my flight because the gate was far and I had to run to get there on time. But it was a great experience. Now I am less nervous about flying alone! So I got to Columbus, OH and first impression was: Too Hot, Too humid and” huge”.

Today marks my first week in Columbus and the word to describe how I feel about it is “AMAZING”! I am just in love with this place. Yes the weather is crazy and I have to wash my hair almost every day that I think it is going to fall out, but I am just in love with this place. Everything is amazing here. My host Rachel who is also my advisor is really amazing—the best host I have ever had. She is so much fun to be around. The people I work with are so nice. The first day I started work, they through me a welcome party.  I loved the donuts! I really love working here. I have my own office with my name own it. I also have a business card, which is AWSOME! Next week, I will start interviewing clients of Catholic Social Services and get their stories. I am excited about that, but at the same time nervous. The activities that I have done so far are so much fun.

I watched an outdoor movie with Rachel—Mean Girls. We also visited the Wilds, which is an animal conservation center. It is so big and beautiful! But it was so hot that day that the animals didn’t feel like moving. They were like “I am not leaving my house today!” We also played volleyball and there is more to come. What is really great is that I get to run here. Every Saturday I go run with a running group and I run alone when I am free. However, something funny and at the same time scary happened with me the first time I went for a run. It was my first Saturday here and I went to join the running group for a morning run. What happened was that I went back alone and got LOST.

I didn’t know how to get back to the place we started from. What is worse was that I didn’t know the name of the street I live on. So I went in every direction asking people for 5 Victorian Gate Way, which is the name of the apartment I live in. Many of them didn’t know where that was. One gave me the wrong direction! So at that point I was terrified. I was like “I am lost and they are never going to find me”. I mean Columbus is a huge city and you know what it is like to get lost in a huge city—SCARY! I kept praying to God for help. I stopped a man in a car and asked him for 5 Victorian Gate Way. He didn’t know where that was and was about to google it when two of the running group showed up. I was so happy and relieved to see them. Getting lost was so scary, but it was a good experience. At least I got to explore the city a bit! So all I can say is I AM IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE!
