Historical Background of the Nursing College

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing Program at Bethlehem University was established in 1976 in order to educate professional nurses to meet the health and nursing needs of the Palestinian people regardless of religion, gender, or socioeconomic background. The graduates are prepared to collaborate with other members of the health team in order to provide quality health care in the community. The Faculty, the first in Palestine to provide a Bachelor Degree in Nursing has established four Bachelor degree programs following the results of the socioeconomic survey (Bethlehem University, 1989).  The programs are Nursing, Midwifery, Occupational Therapy and Physiotherapy.

Philosophy of Nursing Education

At Bethlehem University we believe that nursing is a professional discipline based on arts and sciences. Nurses operate as an integral part of an open system within the community in which the human being is perceived as a whole being with biopsychosocial and spiritual needs.

We value the role of learning as a lifelong process toward personal development and nursing competence. The goals of nursing education is to foster the development of those habits of thought and actions which prepare nurses to offer safe and significant health services to the community.

Nurses are taught within a comprehensive education program. They will provide care following a holistic model in which they can promote and maintain a state of wellness as well as care for the ill, disabled, and those approaching death.

The College of Nursing at Bethlehem University seeks to admit students who have the personal qualities of care and concern for people, a willingness to learn and apply creative nursing services, and a commitment to practice nursing in areas by offering significant professional health services to patients as well as their families. It offers each student a liberal arts education in addition to a broad range of theoretical courses necessary to prepare the student to become a competent practicing nurse, as well as serving as a role model for others in health care.
