Bethlehem University proudly contributed to the impactful dialogue at the 51st annual Huether Lasallian Conference, held November 21-23, 2024, in Baltimore, Maryland. The conference, themed “Lasallian Education Today: Integral, Spiritual, Transformational,” brought together over 275 educators to explore innovative ways to advance the Lasallian mission in diverse educational contexts.
At the heart of the conference was a keynote presentation by Brother Hernán Santos González, FSC, Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University. During the conference, Brother Hernán also launched his latest book, A Tapestry of Voices: Approaching De La Salle, which explores the enduring legacy and spiritual wisdom of Saint John Baptist de La Salle, the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
Brother Hernán’s keynote explored the unique role Bethlehem University plays as a beacon of hope and opportunity in the Holy Land. Through education, the university fosters peace, dialogue, and understanding among its students, faculty, and the broader community. His presentation highlighted the university’s commitment to empowering students from diverse backgrounds and equipping them to navigate the difficulties of life in a conflict-affected region.
“Our mission is to transform lives through holistic education,” Brother Hernán shared. “At Bethlehem University, we strive to provide not only academic excellence but also a refuge where young people can discover their potential, build bridges, and contribute to a brighter future for all.”
Conference attendees were inspired by Brother Hernán’s dedication to promoting Lasallian values in a region that urgently needs hope and unity. Elisabeth Roman, director of partnerships and communications at Instituto Fe y Vida, expressed admiration for Bethlehem University’s work: “They are light and a beacon of hope in an area that is suffering. The Brothers at Bethlehem University are true bridge builders.”
The conference served as a powerful reminder of the global impact of the Lasallian mission. Through breakout sessions, discussions, and networking opportunities, participants deepened their understanding of how to respond to the evolving needs of students while staying rooted in the Lasallian charism.
Bethlehem University’s contribution stood out as a testament to the mission’s ability to flourish even in challenging circumstances. As the only Catholic university in the Holy Land, Bethlehem University exemplifies the transformative potential of education, preparing students to be agents of change in their communities.
Bethlehem University is grateful for the opportunity to contribute to this important dialogue and looks forward to further collaboration with Lasallian educators worldwide.
