In a powerful display of solidarity with the Palestinian suffering under the Israeli war in the Gaza Strip, universities in Bethlehem Governorate, and under the patronage of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education, organized a marathon on Wednesday, 27 November 2024.
The event, held in conjunction with the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, was a poignant response to Israel’s ongoing “Scholasticide” against Palestinian education and culture.
Students, faculty, and staff from Bethlehem University, Dar al-Kalima University, Al-Quds Open University, and Palestine Ahliya University participated in the marathon, which began at Bethlehem University and concluded at Dar al-Kalima University. The event was marked by a moment of silence for the Palestinian martyrs and speeches from university leaders, including
Dr. Ehab Bessaiso, Vice President for Communication and International Relations at Dar al-Kalima University, Father Dr. Iyad Twal, Executive Vice President of Bethlehem University, Dr. Imad Al-Zeer, President of Palestine Ahliya University, and Dr. Mohammad Dweib, Director of Bethlehem Branch of Al-Quds Open University, in addition to Mohammad Taha Governor of Bethlehem.
The speakers condemned Israel’s ongoing attacks on Palestinian education, including the targeting of universities, schools, and cultural institutions in Gaza. They emphasized the importance of education as a fundamental human right and called on the international community to pressure Israel to end its aggression and allow Palestinians to pursue their education and cultural heritage without fear.
The marathon was not only a physical demonstration of solidarity but also a fundraising event. Proceeds from the event will be used to provide scholarships to Palestinian students, particularly those affected by the Israeli war on Gaza. This initiative aims to help students continue their education and build a better future for themselves and for Palestine.
