Bethlehem University’s approach to service-learning has garnered international recognition, earning the prestigious Uniservitate Award with a Special Mention. The university’s innovative initiatives were celebrated on 9 November 2024, during a private audience with the Supreme Pontiff Pope Francis in the Vatican’s Clementine Hall.
The university’s six-member delegation included representatives from the English Language, Literature, and Communications Department — Mr. Ramzi Asali, Mr. Layth R. Awwad, and Ms. Ruba Ayyad—and the Nursing and Midwifery Departments — Dr. Hanan Saca-Hazboun, Ms. Amal Fakhoury, and Ms. Fatima Hammad Madany.
During the Vatican audience, Pope Francis commended the award recipients for their dedication to service-learning, emphasizing its ability to connect the “mind, heart, and hands” in pursuit of meaningful societal change. The Pope reiterated the importance of education that empowers students to become agents of transformation in their communities, invoking the African proverb, “It takes an entire village to educate a child,” to stress the collective effort required for impactful learning.
Spotlight on the Award-Winning Initiatives:
The English and Communications Department developed 11 projects promoting global citizenship and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through digital, hybrid, and in-person formats. These included:
- Six projects led by Mr. Ramzi Asali in “Public Relations”, “Advocacy”, and “Intercultural Communication” courses.
- Three projects by Mr. Layth R. Awwad in the “Digital Communication” course.
- Two projects by Ms. Ruba Ayyad in the “Advocacy” course.
These projects were executed in collaboration with notable partners such as EducAid, America House, Animal and Environment Association, Ibdaa Cultural Center, Qader for Community Development, Wings of Hope, and the University of Montana.
The Nursing and Midwifery Department addressed community health needs through impactful initiatives:
- Dr. Hanan Saca-Hazboun led Breast Cancer Awareness Campaigns for urban and rural women, supported by Al-Maha Cancer Society.
- Ms. Amal Abu Nijmeh/Fakhoury led Projects that focused on health awareness and first-aid interventions, and were conducted by third-year Nursing and Midwifery students in different rehabilitation institutions for children with special needs and in kindergartens.
- Ms. Fatima Hammad Madany engaged midwifery students in creating digital platforms offering health advice and support for women in crisis.
These projects integrated education with real-world challenges, equipping students with practical skills while serving their communities.
Bethlehem University’s recognition by Pope Francis highlights its leadership in values-driven education, aligning with Uniservitate’s mission to advance social responsibility and holistic development.
