Bethlehem University Launches Astronomy Club

Bethlehem University’s Faculty of Applied Sciences, Technology, and Engineering has taken a significant step in promoting scientific exploration with the launch of its new Astronomy Club. The initiative, spearheaded by Dr. Michel Hanania, Mr. Ahmed Attiya, alumni Mereal Lolas and Hanna Estifan, and a group of dedicated students, aims to ignite passion for astronomy among the university’s community.

The club’s establishment was made possible through the kind contributions of the Sir Harold Hood’s Charitable Trust and the Religious of the Assumption, which we received through the Friends of Bethlehem University in Great Britain (FoBU-GB Charity). This invaluable equipment will equip the students with the tools necessary to explore the cosmos and conduct meaningful astronomical research.

The Astronomy Club seeks to introduce students to the wonders of the cosmos, providing them with a deeper understanding of astronomical phenomena. Through hands-on training and practical experience, club members will learn to operate astronomical telescopes, unraveling the mysteries of the universe.

The club’s ambitious plans include organizing astronomical observation nights, where students can witness celestial events firsthand. By collaborating with local schools, the club also hopes to inspire younger generations to embrace science and explore the wonders of the cosmos.

The club has already made significant strides, with the first moon observation session taking place on 9 October 2024. During this session, students had the opportunity to observe the moon and learn about its fascinating features. A breathtaking image of the moon was captured from the university campus, marking a memorable milestone for the club.

The establishment of the Astronomy Club is a testament to Bethlehem University’s commitment to fostering a culture of scientific inquiry and innovation.
