The Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (PIBS) harvested fresh, organic honey from their Botanical Garden on Friday, 16 August 2024. This event underscores the critical role bees play in ecological balance and illustrates the advantages of sustainable honey production practices.
Bees are indispensable for pollinating a wide range of plants, a process that is crucial for supporting biodiversity and sustaining healthy food systems. Over 85% of the world’s food crops depend on these pollinators, making their presence essential for both agricultural productivity and the overall health of ecosystems. The work of bees directly impacts food security and environmental stability, highlighting the importance of their protection.
The beehives at PIBS serve a dual purpose. Beyond their role in honey production, they are integral to the institute’s educational initiatives. During garden tours, visitors have the opportunity to learn about the critical functions of bees, gaining a deeper understanding of their contributions to the environment and agriculture.
The recent honey harvest is a testament to PIBS’s commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship. The institute team is pleased to host students and staff from Bethlehem University for a visit. They will have the opportunity to explore the institute’s diverse activities, including the exhibitions and various sections of the botanical garden, such as the bee corner.
