Community Engagement at PIBS

The Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability (PIBS) continues to engage with the community through a range of regular and diverse activities, each week featuring new topics and beneficiaries.

This week, on Thursday, 8 August 2024, they hosted a webinar titled “Management Plan for Protected Areas (PAs) Containing Wetlands in the Jordan Valley, Palestine,” aimed at introducing key biodiversity stakeholders, the surrounding community, and interested environmentalists to the wetlands in the Jordan Valley, their significance, and management strategies.

Complementing this, they raised community awareness through educational posts, including a Facebook post about Suaeda palaestina, a shrub native to the Dead Sea Valley and the Great Rift Valley, highlighting its habitat, appearance, and the threats it faces due to habitat destruction.

In their work with children, on Tuesday, 6 August 2024, the institute hosted a visit from the “Fun Kitchen” summer camp. The children explored the museum’s natural history and ethnography exhibits, visited the botanical garden, and interacted with various animals.

Additionally, on Friday, 9 August 2024, they organized an event for children centered on the fruits and crops in their botanical garden, including grapes, cactus fruit, and pears. The children harvested fruits, observed the differences between leaves and fruits, learned about ripening seasons and cultivation, and made fresh grape juice from the grapes they picked.
