Bethlehem University Midwives Host Inclusive Health Day

Third-year midwifery students from Bethlehem University’s Faculty of Nursing and Health Sciences came together on Thursday, 16 May 2024, for a health day titled “The Midwife is a Light that shows us life.” Held in collaboration with the Psycho-Social Centre for Women and supported by War Child’s We Rise Initiative, the event took place at the Al-Shurooq School for Blind Children in Beit Jala.

The day served as a testament to the Faculty’s commitment to serving the unique needs of the visually impaired community. The event aimed to raise awareness about the multifaceted role of midwives, highlighting their impact beyond delivery rooms and hospitals.

Ms. Salam Awad, Dean of the Faculty, and Mrs. Fatima Hammad, Midwifery program coordinator, welcomed attendees and emphasized the importance of community engagement and education in healthcare projects. Engaging activities like musical performances and a role play created by the midwifery students addressed the issue of bullying against individuals with special needs, while celebrating their talents and contributions to society.

The day offered a number of educational opportunities through various stations. Students from Bethlehem University’s Occupational Therapy program had a station focusing on tools for the visually impaired and sensory experiences, while other stations focused on raising awareness about diabetes, hypertension, healthy eating habits, breast cancer (including clinical examinations with privacy), violence prevention, and safety measures for people with disabilities.

Additionally, Mrs. Heba Al-Aissa, a Neonatal Nurse and Breastfeeding Consultant, provided valuable insights at a dedicated breastfeeding consultation station. The Psycho-Social Centre for Women also had a presence, showcasing their services to the local community.

Overall, the day served as a platform to celebrate the invaluable role of midwives, promote inclusivity, and advocate for the well-being of all individuals within the community.
