Former Chancellor of Bethlehem University Dies

Andrea Cordero Cardinal Lanza di Montezemolo died on Sunday, 19 November, in Italy at the age of 92.

On 28 April 1990 he became Apostolic Delegate to Jerusalem and Palestine and, one month later, to Cyprus. While he held this appointment, the 1993 Fundamental Agreement between the Holy See and the State of Israel was reached. This paved the way for establishing full diplomatic relations, so that he became the first Nuncio to Israel.

As the Apostolic Delegate to Palestine, Cardinal Montezemolo was Chancellor of Bethlehem University because of the joint venture arrangement between Bethlehem University and the Vatican. He held that position  from 1990 till 1998, before being posted to Italy as Nuncio.  After his retirement, he worked closely with Pope Benedict XVI.

May he rest in Peace.
