Afonso Cruz at Bethlehem University

As part of the International Translation and Literature week organized by the Ministry of Culture, Bethlehem University hosted a symposium with the international novelist, animator, illustrator and musician Afonso Cruz on Monday 2nd October 2017.

The one hour symposium began with a welcoming note from Dr. Said Ayyad, the Chairperson of the Arabic Department, who hoped this would be an intellectual and enriching session for literary students.

Ms. Hanadi Soudah Younan, the Dean of Arts, speaking to the audience explained that one of the most important values of the department was to expose students to new literary works. She hoped that BU students would be inspired by Cruz.

Afonso Cruz introduced the audience to his background in writing. He began to write only nine years ago and has already published 25 books. He read some excerpts from his writings.

Also present was the Tunisian translator from the Portuguese language, AbdulJalil Al-Arabi, who had interpreted Cruz’s session into Arabic. He had already translated one of Cruz books.

Prior to the symposium, Cruz was taken on a tour around campus to the different facilities.

Afonso Cruz was born in 1971 in Figuera da Foz, Portugal. He studied at the Antonio Arroio Arts High School in Lesbonne, at the College of Fine Arts, and at the Madera Institute of Plastic Arts. He  published his first novel in 2008 which was followed by an encyclopedia.
