Leadership Workshop for New Student Orientation Counselors

January, 18, 19, and 21, 2010

A three-day workshop on Leadership in cooperation with Mai Jaber, Assistant to the Dean of Students' Office at BU, was held for students who volunteer to work as counselors for the New Student Orientation. Twenty-six students from different Faculties at BU attended the workshop.  The first day the program was conducted by Mr Zoughbi Zoughbi, from the Wi'am Center, on "conflict management", and the following two days by Br Peter Iorlano, FSC and Dr Inge Tiemann on "leadership and responsibility".

The overall approach was experiential learning combined with continuous reflection of theory and praxis pertinent to the topic. The starting point of the workshop was identifying the strengths each participant brings to the work the new student orientation requires with a view to leadership. In a variety of creative settings the students were able to explore several elements of leadership, like responsible behaviors, commitment, and trust. By drawing on their own ideas and experiences, students elaborated in group work different models of leadership. In a second stage of discussion the participants compared and discussed their ideas on the background of leadership theories.

"We need more workshops like this," said some of the participants at the end of workshop. The Cardinal Martini Leadership Institute and the Dean of Students' Office currently consider planning another workshop for the New Student Orientation Counselors to be held later in Spring Semester 2010.
