Bethlehem University recently had the honor of welcoming a delegation from the Holy Land Commission (HLC) of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (EOHSJ). This visit, held on 10 March 2025, reaffirmed the strong partnership between the two institutions and underscored the vital role of education in fostering hope, resilience, and opportunity for Palestinian students.
The HLC plays a crucial role in ensuring that EOHSJ funds are effectively allocated to support institutions in the Holy Land. Their presence at Bethlehem University highlighted the transformative power of education and the ongoing challenges facing students in the region.
A Commitment to Leadership & Innovation
The delegation was warmly welcomed by Brother Hernán Santos, Vice Chancellor of Bethlehem University, who provided an overview of the institution’s strategic vision and recent developments. Brother Hernán shared the exciting news about Bethlehem University’s new strategic plan, emphasizing its Transformative Educational Model and updated core curriculum, designed to prepare graduates for Industry 4.0.
He also introduced the new building underway for the Hamad Al Harazeen Faculty of Applied Sciences, Technology, and Engineering, which will house the university’s new Master’s in Engineering program. This program, developed in collaboration with ECAM LaSalle, a renowned Lasallian Catholic engineering university in Lyon, France, will allow students to gain cutting-edge knowledge and spend three semesters on the ECAM LaSalle campus in Lyon.
A key focus of the visit was the university’s collaboration with the Latin Patriarchate, particularly regarding educational initiatives in Gaza. Mr. Sami El-Yousef, CEO of the Latin Patriarchate, reaffirmed their dedication to expanding joint efforts in Gaza, where educational needs remain critical.
Students Share Their Stories
One of the most powerful moments of the visit came when students shared their personal experiences. Momen Al Mohtaseb, Jeslyn Khair, and alumnus Farah Soudah detailed the daily struggles they face, including movement restrictions, financial hardships, and the pursuit of academic excellence despite these obstacles.
“Without this scholarship, I wouldn’t be able to continue my studies,” shared Jeslyn Khair. “It’s more than just financial aid—it’s a message that we are not alone.”
They expressed deep gratitude for EOHSJ scholarships, which they described as a lifeline in making higher education possible. Their stories reinforced how education serves as both a form of resistance and a pathway to a better future.
Expanding Endowed Scholarships
During discussions, the HLC expressed strong interest in providing additional endowed scholarship funds, building on the 29 already in place, to support Bethlehem University students enrolling in the new Master’s in Engineering program. This additional support would allow students to spend three semesters at ECAM LaSalle in Lyon, France, providing them with a world-class education in engineering and applied sciences.
Brother Hernán expressed deep appreciation for the long-standing and transformative support of the Equestrian Order, and his delight in their interest to expand their endowed scholarship support, particularly for this new Master’s program. This commitment will further enhance opportunities for Palestinian students, empowering them to excel academically and professionally on an international scale.
Empowering Communities Through the AFAQ Program
Mr. Moussa Rabadi, Director of the Institute for Community Engagement and Partnerships (ICEP), introduced the AFAQ program, a groundbreaking initiative supported by EOHSJ funding. This program focuses on:
- Vocational training & skill development
- Community empowerment through education
- Career readiness & employment opportunities
By highlighting real-life success stories, Mr. Rabadi underscored the program’s long-term impact and the importance of expanding partnerships to sustain its growth.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Partnerships
In closing remarks, Prof. Bart McGettrick and Mr. Sami El-Yousef reaffirmed the importance of Bethlehem University’s mission and the ongoing collaboration with EOHSJ. Their words underscored the shared responsibility to ensure that higher education remains accessible and that students have the resources needed to succeed.
The visit concluded with a prayer, symbolizing the deep connection between faith, education, and community empowerment.
The presence of the Holy Land Commission together with the Latin Patriarchate at Bethlehem University reaffirmed our shared commitment to support education, uplift communities, and create opportunities for Palestinian students. Through their unwavering support, EOHSJ and the Latin Patriarchate continue to empower students to overcome challenges and build a future of hope, leadership, and service.
