Ramzi Asali Receives Top Paper Award at WSCA 2025

Bethlehem University was proudly represented at the annual convention of the Western States Communication Association (WSCA), one of the largest gatherings of academics, students, and practitioners in the field of communication in the USA. The convention took place in Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 13–17 February 2025, centered around the theme of “Support.”

A highlight of the event was the recognition of Mr. Ramzi Asali from the Department of English and Communication, who received the prestigious “Top Paper” award in Communication and Instruction. The awarded paper, co-authored and presented with Prof. Christina Yoshimura from the University of Montana, examined the significance and impact of virtual cultural exchanges in building bridges between American and Palestinian students.

The research was based on a qualitative analysis of student reflection papers submitted as part of the virtual exchange program between Bethlehem University and the University of Montana, which took place in Fall 2024.

Beyond academic discussions, the convention also featured initiatives that shed light on Palestinian social and cultural life. One such project, “The Phoenix of Gaza,” was presented by Dr. Naim Abu Radi and Dr. Ahlam Muhtaseb of the University of California. This innovative virtual reality experience captures Gaza’s rich cultural heritage before its destruction in the ongoing war. Initially designed to celebrate Palestinian culture, the project has evolved into a vital tool for cultural preservation in the face of devastation.

Reflecting on the experience, Mr. Asali stated:
“Attending WSCA was an incredible opportunity to represent Bethlehem University on an international stage and to connect with communication scholars and professionals. I hope these connections will lead to meaningful collaborations.”

Bethlehem University continues to engage in global academic discussions, fostering research, collaboration, and cultural exchange that bridge communities and create lasting impact.
