Community Engagement for Environmental Sustainability at PIBS

On Thursday, 13 February 2025, Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability – Bethlehem University (PIBS) hosted a webinar titled “Exploring Biosphere Reserves: Development of Al-Arqoub Reserve as a Biosphere Reserve.” This informative session, attended by 30 participants both in person and virtually, introduced attendees to the concept and significance of biosphere reserves, which are key areas for conservation and sustainable development.

The webinar also featured an in-depth presentation on the Al-Arqoub Reserve project, funded by the National Geographic Society, discussing the ongoing efforts to develop it into a recognized biosphere reserve and the importance of protecting its unique biodiversity.

The following day, Friday, 14 February 2025, PIBS organized an interactive session for children as part of its ongoing educational programs aimed at raising environmental awareness. The activity, attended by 20 children, introduced children to the unique features of bird bones and how they help birds fly and soar. They also learned about bird migrations, the distinguishing characteristics of various bird species, and their roles in ecosystems. The session included a tour of the natural history museum, where they viewed taxidermied birds, and a stroll through the garden, where they observed different bird species and classified them using a special booklet provided by PIBS.

Through these efforts, PIBS continues to foster environmental awareness and promote sustainability in local communities. PIBS remains dedicated to engaging the community through a variety of weekly activities.
