Four Interactive Media students from Bethlehem University—Sireen Najajreh, Areen Abu Srour, Zainab Shaqirat, and Rua Wazwaz—organized an impactful initiative titled “Verifying News and Misinformation” in the scenic village of Battir. The initiative was carried out under the supervision of Ms. Tamara Abu Laban and in collaboration with the Rural Women’s Development Society.
Targeting women from rural areas, including Hussan, Wadi Rahhal, and Beit Fajjar, the initiative aimed to enhance their awareness of methods for verifying the accuracy of news and information shared on social media. This effort addressed the widespread prevalence of misinformation and its negative impacts on society.
The event featured engaging and interactive activities in the picturesque natural surroundings of Battir. Participants took part in various stations, including:
- “Fact or Rumor” game, encouraging critical thinking.
- Discussions aimed at breaking stereotypes and countering misinformation.
- Role-playing scenarios that simulated real-life interactions with rumors and misinformation.
Additionally, participants received hands-on training in using modern digital tools, such as reverse image search techniques and reliable platforms for information verification.
The women expressed their admiration for the initiative, praising the friendly atmosphere and the interactive activities that helped enhance their understanding of handling information in their daily lives.
This initiative is part of the Media Literacy Program led by Bethlehem University’s Institute for Community Partnership, in collaboration with the Finnish Lifelong Learning Foundation (KVS). It underscores Bethlehem University’s commitment to empowering Palestinian women and fostering a culture of accountability and media responsibility amidst the challenges of the digital age.
