On Thursday, 5 December 2024, Bethlehem University Zbierski Library hosted an engaging activity titled “Celebrating the Legacy of Club Deportivo Palestino” drawing in football enthusiasts and culturally curious students.
Library Director, Ms. Elizabeth D’souza, warmly welcomed the students, expressing gratitude for their participation and extending special thanks to Mr. Qaiss Omar Awad for preparing and leading the activity.
In an immersive and compelling hour, Qaiss Awad intertwined history, culture, and passion to life, taking the participants on a journey into the remarkable story of Club Deportivo Palestino. Founded in 1920 by Palestinian immigrants in Santiago, Chile, the club transcends football, standing as a resilient symbol of identity and heritage for the Palestinian diaspora.
Through captivating storytelling, Qaiss highlighted how the club’s journey has become a beacon of cultural pride, embodying the spirit of perseverance. He further deepened the narrative by sharing video clips illustrating the struggles of Palestinians, particularly in Gaza leaving the audience with a sense of solidarity and reflection.
The hour was alive with interaction. Qaiss engaged participants in a dynamic quiz on Club Deportivo Palestino’s history and Palestinian heritage. The friendly competition brought joy and excitement with attendees competing enthusiastically for thoughtfully prepared prizes.
The event left the 20 participants inspired enriched and with a deeper appreciation for the intersection of sport, culture and identity.
