Bethlehem University students Afnan Al-Shouli and Sadeel Issa launched an initiative titled Media Literacy and Digital Safety at the Salesian Vocational Training Center in Bethlehem, under the supervision of Ms. Tamara Abu Laban. This initiative is part of the media literacy projects spearheaded by the Institute for Community Engagement and Partnership (ICP) at Bethlehem University, in collaboration with the the Finnish Lifelong Learning Foundation (KVS).
The initiative included awareness sessions designed to address two critical areas: digital safety and citizen journalism. These sessions were conducted in collaboration with the Palestinian Police’s Cybercrime Unit.
Targeting students specializing in electricity, carpentry, and mechanics, the sessions highlighted the importance of safe and effective use of modern communication tools in today’s rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Major Fares Salahat from the Cybercrime Unit delivered an insightful workshop on cybercrime, shedding light on key strategies to enhance digital safety. This was followed by training sessions led by Afnan and Sadeel, focusing on the principles of citizen journalism and media literacy. These sessions emphasized the opportunities and challenges presented by the digital age, encouraging participants to engage critically and responsibly with media and technology.
This initiative reflects Bethlehem University’s commitment to empowering students and local communities by fostering digital awareness and media literacy, equipping participants with tools to navigate and contribute meaningfully in a connected world.
