This week, the Palestine Institute for Biodiversity and Sustainability conducted two engaging educational activities centered on environmental topics, both of which occur on a weekly basis, featuring new subjects each time.
The first activity was a webinar highlighting a manuscript accepted for publication in the Journal of Threatened Taxa, titled “Noteworthy Records of Vascular Plants from the West Bank, Occupied Palestinian Territories.” This paper presents research conducted at PIBS in collaboration with experts in the field. The webinar was attended by 17 participants and emphasized the significance of the findings and their implications for conservation efforts in the region.
The second activity was aimed at children, introducing them to the fascinating world of hedgehogs. Participants explored various aspects of hedgehog life, including their unique behaviors and ecological roles. They learned intriguing facts about these creatures, observed a family of Erinaceus concolor (the European hedgehog) at the Institute’s animal rehabilitation unit, and had the opportunity to feed them. To further enrich the experience, the children also participated in a fun craft project related to hedgehogs, encouraging creativity and a deeper appreciation for these animals and their role in nature.
