Brother Dominic A. Smith, born Patrick Francis Smith in Hanover PA on March 13, 1941, son of the late Harold C. Smith and late Anna Mary (Lawrence) Smith, died at De La Salle Hall, Lincroft NJ on January 29, 2023 after a brief illness. Brother Dominic, known as “Pat” to his family, was a dedicated Brother of the Christian Schools for 63 years. He was a graduate of Delone Catholic High School McSherrystown in the class of 1959, and entered the Novitiate of the Brothers of the Christian Schools in Ammendale MD on June 15 1959. Pat received the Religious Habit of the Brothers of the Christian Schools and the name Brother Dominic Alphonsus on September 7, 1959. He pronounced his Perpetual Vows in Philadelphia PA on August 30, 1966. Brother Dominic taught French, Spanish and Religion and served as school basketball team moderator in the schools he served, which included Bishop Dennis J. O’Connell High School, Arlington VA (1964-1971), LaSalle College High School, Wyndmoor PA (1971-1982,1996-1997), Central Catholic High School, Pittsburg, PA (1982-1996). His training in Library Science equipped him to serve as head librarian at Bethlehem University, in Bethlehem, Palestine from 1997-2007, where he introduced modern technology to its holdings. From 2008 until 2022 he volunteered as secretary for the newly establish Bethlehem University Foundation where he was responsible for several management duties. In this capacity, Brother Dominic established an endowment fund with Bethlehem University Foundation in honor of his parents. Brother Dominic lived out a life of service, dedication, and love. He created a legacy of learning that will impact generations to come. Patrick was survived by 4 brothers and 4 sisters: Louise A Little (spouse Nick) of Hanover PA, John H. Smith (wife Kathy) of Milwaukee, WI, Margaret E. Smith of Millsboro DE, James L. Smith of Gettysburg, PA, Paul J. Smith of Glenville, PA, Helena A. Smith of Dover, PA, Thomas P. Smith (wife Jody) of Hanover, PA and Angela C. Smith-Aumen (and spouse Steve Aumen) of Dillsburg, PA, numerous nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. He was pre-deceased by his father, mother, sister Eileen M. Smith of Baltimore, MD, sister-in law Jean (Sneeringer) Smith, and Gloria Buffington Smith. Brother Dominic was memorialized in a private ceremony with family and his peers in the La Salle Hall chapel of the Brothers of the Christian Schools on February 3 2023 and laid to rest in the cemetery of La Salle Hall in Beltsville MD. The family expresses its deepest and sincere appreciation for the care provided to Brother Dominic by the Brothers of the Christian Schools.
